Drake Treffeisen

Palmer Ranch

Drake, an Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College student, is studying Livestock Production and Agriculture Business. He comes from Lake Panasoffkee, Florida, and is spending the summer as an intern at Palmer Ranch with Jay and Jaci Palmer. Drake has a background in agriculture and runs a small cow/calf operation.

Drake's decision to join the Sandhills Ranch Internship Program was driven by his eagerness to deepen his knowledge of cattle and horse management. He is particularly excited about the hands-on opportunities to learn within the beef industry and experience how a large livestock herd is maintained and managed. "I'm truly passionate about the cattle industry," Drake says. He is particularly excited about the opportunity to experience the Sandhills and develop his skills in livestock breeding programs and artificial insemination. Drake finds solace in the outdoors and water activities in his free time.

Updates

What has been most rewarding?

The most rewarding part of my internship has been assisting with the breeding season, getting to A.I., and gaining confidence with horses. It has also been rewarding to have my mentor, Jay, trust me to complete tasks independently.

What have you grown to appreciate about the Sandhills?

I have grown to love the weather and the people in the Sandhills. They are all pretty nice, fun to joke around with, and good to get along with.

Have you had any struggles?

My biggest struggle was roping, but I’m starting to get the hang of it. I’ve appreciated the opportunity to practice roping and having a good horse to ride. My horsemanship and horse riding skills have really grown and I’ve gained more self-confidence.

Future plans:

Drake is returning to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College this fall, where he will continue his studies in Livestock Production and Ag Business. He plans to grow his own cattle herd and work and stay active in the cattle industry.
